Things that I have learned about snow

Friday, February 12th, 2010

We are from Dallas.  The weather is fantastic in the spring, extraordinarily hot in the summer, and pleasantly cool in the fall.  And while the winters are intermittently frigid, we seldom see any significant accumulation of snow.

Well so far, this tour has been a Texas kid’s dream come true.  It’s like reading a Calvin and Hobbes book.  There is snow everywhere.  I started a snowball fight today and I’m 25 years old.  But there have been many things we were COMPLETELY unprepared for.  If you are a fan from Texas, may the following list serve as a guide, should you choose to travel up north.  If you’re from up north, may our drastic lack of snow-preparedness entertain you.

Things that I have learned about snow:

1.)  Buy some snow boots.  When snow melts, it soaks whatever it touches… Like my now water-laden sketchers.  Loading gear with cold, wet feet is not fun.

2.)  If you are silly enough to be driving in blizzard weather, do it in the daytime, and stick to the highways.  The snowplows don’t spend a lot of time on residential streets.  So if you have to drive through a neighborhood, don’t be surprised when the locals who are shoveling their driveways all turn and look at you with blank, semi-judgmental stares…. or when you get stuck trying to drive up a hill (see pictures in entry below).

3.)  Long-underwear is the difference between complete misery and bliss.

Things that I have learned about snowball fights:

1.)  Gloves are not for losers… especially if you want to engage in an extended snowball confrontation.  I lost my first snowball fight because I couldn’t feel my hands anymore…

2.)  Don’t rush your snowball construction.  If you don’t take the time to fashion an aerodynamic projectile, you won’t be hitting anyone.  And if you don’t pack it tightly enough it will break apart before contact with your adversary.

3.)  Don’t throw ice.  Would you throw a rock at your best friend?  It’s the same thing.

That’s all I have for now.  We’re on our way to Boston today, riding in The Washington with the Kenobi in tow. Expect some new pictures from Shaun soon.

Song for the day?  “Freeze and Explode” by Cassettes Won’t Listen.  Do it now.

Today started just as any other day on Sleeperstar tour: up early(ish), reading, a little workout, breakfast at the hotel, then hit the road to brave the storm on our way to the next stop.  Today, however, the snow got the best of us.

TOUR SCOREBOARD:
Storm -1

Until we meet again, storm.

[early in the day, situation normal]

[aaaannndd...we're stuck.]

At the end of the day, however, Jon from the towing company got us out and we won. We always do.

24 hours later…

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

The traveling has begun!  We left Dallas on Monday around 8:30pm and decided to cover as much ground as possible so we could make sure to have enough time to get safely through all the bad weather in the north east.  So, after driving through the night non-stop we find ourselves, 24 hours later, somewhere in Roanoke, VA in the comfort of a hotel room.  The weather has been gloomy and snowy but the countryside is absolutely beautiful.  Here are a few images from today, starting at Denny’s for our FREE grand slam breakfasts!

New Site!

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Our new site is launched! We really wanted a simple clean site that was focused on delivering new and fresh content to our fans on a regular basis.  While our myspace is awesome and a great place to introduce fans to Sleeperstar, it is a limited and cluttered platform. This site is much more straight forward and better organized to deliver the content you want without all the clutter.  We’ll all be logging in and giving you guys our thoughts, photos, happenings, videos, and other awesome stuff from the road! So, enjoy it, read it, experience it, and JOIN the conversation!  Leave us comments on our posts with your thoughts, idea, suggestions, etc!  Love you all, see you soon!

-Shaun-

ps. I can’t wait to start sharing photos with you guys of our adventures!  Here’s a few from our tour through the desert last year, including a stop at the Hoover Dam!  Enjoy:
